Gala Programme

The club’s gala programme provides a progressive, competitive pathway through squads, from Development to Performance.

Development and Skills swimmers begin with accessible Level 1 and Level 2 galas, where the emphasis is on confidence, technique and learning how to compete. Transition swimmers move into a more structured programme of Level 2 and Level 3 galas and begin working towards provincial and national qualifying standards. Pathway swimmers compete regularly at Level 3 and work towards Level 4 and Level 5 championships. Performance swimmers follow a more targeted programme focused on major provincial, national and international-standard competitions.

Swimmers may attend galas listed for adjacent squads, depending on their age, stage of development, qualifying times and coaching guidance.

Competitive pathway at a glance in terms of squad participants

Development → Skills → Transition → Pathway → Performance

Development
An introduction to galas in a supportive and enjoyable club environment, with an emphasis on building confidence and applying basic swimming skills in race conditions.
Skills
Swimmers begin to participate more regularly in competition, including club galas and Future Challengers events. The focus is on developing confidence, improving racing skills and making competition a positive part of swimmer development.
Transition
Swimmers move into a more structured programme, particularly across Level 2 and Level 3 events. The focus is on developing consistent race standards and gaining experience across a broader range of events and distances.
Pathway
Swimmers follow a comprehensive programme with regular Level 3 competition. The focus is on achieving and improving qualifying times, gaining experience at multi-day meets, and developing race strategy, consistency and resilience. Swimmers work towards provincial short-course and long-course championships and, where appropriate, national age group, youth and senior competition.
Performance
Swimmers follow a targeted programme focused on provincial, national and international-standard meets. Qualification, event selection and performance outcomes become increasingly important.
Why do we take this approach?

The pathway supports swimmers in moving from participation, to applying racing skills, to consistent performance, to qualification, and ultimately to targeted championship performance. The pathway is a guide rather than an automatic progression or gala-entry checklist. Individual gala selection will take account of the swimmer’s age, stage of development, qualifying standards and coaching guidance.
